The Wedding Of Our Dreams

Derry Girls’ star ties the knot.

POSTED BY JULIETTE RACKHAM

What do you get when you join Ireland and Scotland together in matrimony? Other than a shared hatred for the English, and probably a few offensive jokes (that we’ll ignore), a really beautiful wedding!

The recent nuptials of Derry Girls’ star Saoirse-Monica Jackson and her new husband DJ Denis Sulta (real name Hector Barbour), made a spectacle of this, showing that the welding of tradition and modernity, when done well, is something to behold. The Irish actress and Scottish DJ’s matrimony absorbed the culture of their countries, with this being evident right from the engagement, where Hector proposed in Donegal with a custom ring from a Glaswegian Jeweller (Blair and Sheridan), so he could decorate her hand with a little bit of his heritage.

The couple tied the knot (literally – as they incorporated some pagan traditions) in Ireland, more specifically, they got married in Dromquinna Manor, in County Kerry. Thankfully, the couple was blessed with good weather (clearly, they were being rewarded for choosing home comfort over guaranteed sun in the painstaking debate over a destination wedding).

The main event

Their outfits were arguably the most stunning aspect of the entire event. The bride adorned a custom dress from Annie’s Ibiza, which was inspired by one of Annie’s dresses which Zendaya had worn in the past, as well as a runway look from Dior which carried the vision for the skirt (these were Saoirse’s two muses). Her dress was absolutely gorgeous – powerfully structured with the corset of our dreams, yet perfectly feminine with lace and tulle embellishments and puff sleeves. The champagne-white colour created a breathtaking look of timeless elegance, which suited Saoirse exceptionally well. Despite the beautiful use of fabric to create texture, the actress wasn’t lost in her dress thanks to the asymmetric hemline (short in the front, long in the back), which added an unconventional yet incredibly fun detail. This dress will live forever in our wedding Pinterest boards!

Paying homage to her family, she added Celtic brooches to her dress (using blue thread for her ‘something blue’) to nod to her mum, and making the corset reversible, with tartan on the inside, to nod to her new mother-in-law. She dusted the look with bespoke emerald jewellery from Eily O’Connell, which allowed Saoirse to match the bridesmaid’s (one of which was her co-star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell – how sweet!) patterned green satin dresses, from Rat and Boa (a brand which, like Saoirse, is native to Derry).

For her hair and makeup, Saoirse had one request: Celtic warrior princess. Which, with the aid of the hair extensions that made her feel “Pagan” and “regal”, was definitely achieved.

For her evening look, she hung up her platform heels, and changed into a pair of white go-go boots (as if her footwear couldn’t get any cooler). She also switched her corset around to the tartan pattern (a complete surprise to her new husband), and made the skirt shorter, which let her dance into the early hours of the morning (as all brides should).

Like Saoirse, Hector also used his family as the muse for his ceremony attire. His glengarry hat, feathers and all, was copied straight from his dad’s wedding look. Hector was dressed by his country’s tradition, wearing a traditional kilt from Macgregor and MacDuff, in a Hebridean Mackenzie tartan. The kilt came with a custom Montrose doublet jacket, and he finished the look with his dad’s sporran and his family’s brooch, which he used for the occasion. He looked like the incarnation of Scotland, and he pulled it off so well!

Beyond the clothes

Scattered throughout the celebrations, they embellished the weekend with details that kept traditions alive – an Irish storyteller, Irish music (to create the atmosphere), and Guinness on tap – because what else properly encapsulates Irish culture?

As if the wedding wasn’t already a perfect representation of their personalities, Saoirse walked down the aisle to a cover of Dreams by the Cranberries – anyone who’s seen Derry Girls will understand the significance of this. It really felt like a full circle moment, which honestly couldn’t have been written better.

Though they placed emphasis on including tradition and their heritage, there was only one thing that remained at the centre of their wedding – their love (aww, how cute!). Though the details and the beauty of the wedding acted as a worthy distraction, it was hard to look past the authenticity of the couple's smiles!
