A Look Inside: Irish Slow-Fashion Brand MNW’s Dazzling Celtic Embroidered Scarves
Megan Nolan Walsh's vision for sustainable Irish style.
MNW design is a Dublin-based fashion brand created by the brilliant Megan Nolan Walsh. Walsh’s artistic inspiration stems from vibrant colors and uniqueness, shaped with the respectful art form of slow fashion. The core of her brand is undeniably her Celtic scarves which would send any Gen-Z girl’s heart racing. Walsh creates the most beautiful and distinct Celtic scarves with Irish history stitched into every corner. Each scarf breathes life back into Ireland’s past and educates others on a country’s enriched traditions.
The “claddagh” scarf is her most famous design, with the brand new beaded claddagh scarf making its debut at Dublin’s Independent Fashion Week in November 2024. Walsh took her original design and elevated it through the intricate detailing of beads and textural development. The claddagh symbol entails two hands holding a crowned heart which symbolizes friendship and love, originating from a small fishing village in County Galway. The symbol is most popularly found on a ring, with many Irish people still partaking in the custom of gifting one to someone they love.
The “Irish harp” scarf is another iconic design of the MNW brand. Walsh mimics its historical dark blue background into her fashion, embroidering deep blues and indigos into her knitted creations. In Irish mythology, the harp or an chláirseach signified the sovereignty of Ireland, now considered Ireland’s heraldic symbol. It has many origins, one of them being the Irish people’s intrinsic talent for the art of music. It can still be seen on some of the original Irish coins that helped set Ireland’s coinage apart from its neighbors across the Atlantic, the British Empire.
MNW is truly one of Ireland’s hidden gems in the fashion world and should be watched closely. In recent years, Ireland has made its mark in Hollywood with the likes of Paul Mescal, Saoirse Ronan, and Barry Keoghan all dominating the box office. It is safe to say, Ireland’s brooding talent and culture within fashion is no exception. Find out more at Mnw.ie.
