Ari Dayan Reinterprets Stories Of Misunderstood Female Icons

Featuring Eve, Venus, Marie Antoinette, and Joan of Arc.

Just another song about heartbreak, just another ode from an abandoned lover? Well, not this time. Although Ari Dayan, a self-proclaimed Witch of the West Coast and the new Stevie Nicks of our times, admittedly draws inspiration from these experiences, her newest single, ‘Underserving,’ explores platitudinous subjects in an imaginative and breath-taking way.

A hypnotizing song, flowing with pain and an almost piercing sense of self-hatred, unfolds Ari’s vulnerabilities and memories of a messy end to a relationship. Yet, in the music video to ‘Undeserving,’ directed by Diana Ali Chire, Ari Dayan almost distances herself from her personal experiences as she assumes identities of persecuted, used, and misunderstood women: Eve, Venus, Marie Antoinette, and Joan of Arc. Although today, history labels them as icons, their suffering and objectification is often overlooked.

Ari Dayan sheds new light on their stories and thanks to that, she becomes every woman, slightly different than a joyful one from Whitney Houston’s song. An LA artist creates a woman who’s unhappy and hurt, yet authentic. Sevdaliza should feel threatened.

‘Undeserving’ by Ari Dayan is a remedy for toxic positivity, an alternative history lesson, and the most beautiful expression of the most difficult emotions.
