NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS: The Girl Trio Somewhere Between Tumblr, TikTok And Zoom Eras

Their latest single ‘evian (boohoo!)’ is a new sad girl anthem.

As 2020 as it sounds, NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS, a girl trio comprised of college friends, Gabi Gotts, Perrin Xthona, and Tammy Gonzalez, came into being on Zoom. Originally, they intended to be songwriters and a creative outlet for women rather than actual artists, which explains their name, taken from a TikTok trend. Luckily, thanks to the support received after their first single, they decided to pursue a musical career, becoming the girl trio that the new age deserves and needs.

They sound like an intersection between Charlie XCX and Ellise and similarly to these artists, they don’t take themselves too seriously. The newest track by NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS, entitled ‘evian (boohoo!),’ a hyperpop, energetic, noisy, sad girl anthem bottles up their tears. Literally.

‘Perrin made a joke about bottling up our tears like an Evian bottle and in response, our collaborator, Alice Longyu Gao, immediately sang what would become the first two lines of the song,’ NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS explain that after an exhausting writing session they decided to change sadness into anesthetics. ‘Perrin made a joke about bottling up our tears like an Evian bottle and in response, our collaborator, Alice Longyu Gao, immediately sang what would become the first two lines of the song.’ And they add, ‘similar to the 2014 Tumblr era of romanticizing sadness, writing this track was our way of laughing at ourselves and turning our emotional baggage into a Louis luggage set. The song looks at the way we process sadness in a satirical way.’

NOT THE MAIN CHARACTERS also share a visualizer to ‘evian (boohoo!),’ which translates an abstract concept of bottling up tears to a physical process of mass production of bottled tears. The category is: sad but make it fun and aesthetically pleasing.
