Naomi Campbell Closes Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2022 Show
The SS22 collection draws inspiration from London’s magnificent skies and storm-chasing.
A sense of homecoming is in the air as Alexander McQueen returns to London to debut its Spring/Summer 2022 collection. After typically being shown as part of Paris Fashion Week in the past, the London-based fashion house chose to stay in the city that was the inspiration for the SS22 collection. Adding to the reunion, Naomi Campbell marked her return to the McQueen runway, as she has not modeled for the brand since Lee McQueen’s passing in 2010.
Creative director, Sarah Burton, is bringing new direction to the brand with her recent designs. Having long been influenced by flora in her work, Burton is drawing from a different landscape for her SS22 collection – the tumultuous, ever-changing London sky. She tracked the cloud formations and weather patterns from the rooftops of McQueen studio in order to fully immerse herself in the city’s environment.
“That led me to storm chasing,” Burton wrote. “I love the idea of the McQueen woman being a storm chaser, of the qualities of storm chasing uniting the passionately individual community of characters wearing the clothes. They inhabit the same universe and the clothes are inspired by and made for them. Storm chasing is not only about the beauty of the views but also a sense of mystery and excitement – about embracing the fact that we can’t ever be sure of what might happen next. To give up control and be directly in touch with the unpredictable is to be part of nature, to see and feel it at its most intense - to be at one with a world that is bigger and more powerful than we are.”
The collection features elegant outerwear, tailored suiting, and full-skirted midi dresses that complement London’s urban terrain. Cloudy prints, balloon sleeves, and crystal raindrop embroidery all reinforce Burton’s appreciation for the magic and beauty that emerges when surrendering to the unknown.
