The MOBO AWARD

What we wearing the red carpet.

Madman Jocey made a bold fashion statement with a dress that blended fashion with cultural references. Her gown was adorned with a unique braid design, and she paired it with cornrow braids styled in circular shapes. The concept had potential—it was an innovative and daring take on merging hair artistry with fashion.

However, despite the bold vision, it didn’t fully translate into a cohesive or flattering look. While her attempt to blend elements of Black culture into a red carpet moment was admirable, the execution felt off. The dress itself didn’t do justice to the concept, and the hairstyle, while creative, didn’t tie the whole look together. Sometimes, fashion is about finding that delicate balance between creativity and wearability, and unfortunately, Jocey’s look didn’t manage to find that sweet spot.

It’s clear that Jocey was trying to push boundaries, but it ended up feeling like an unfinished idea rather than a complete fashion statement. That being said, I appreciate the ambition and effort behind her attempt to use the red carpet as a platform for self-expression.

Fashion at the MOBOs: A Call for More Attention to Detail

In general, this year’s MOBO Awards didn’t have the level of high-fashion moments that we’ve seen in previous years. Many stars attempted to show they understood the importance of fashion on the red carpet, but the results were mixed. There was an overall sense that people were trying to make a statement, but a lot of looks felt like they missed the mark, either because of mismatched styling, failed concepts, or simply trying too hard.

Fashion on the red carpet isn’t just about wearing something extravagant or experimental; it’s about understanding your own style, taking calculated risks, and knowing when to keep it simple. The goal is to capture attention for all the right reasons. Unfortunately, too many looks at the MOBOs this year felt more like a swing and a miss rather than a home run.

In Conclusion: More Work to Be Done

While the night showcased incredible talent in music and entertainment, when it comes to fashion, there is still room for improvement. The MOBO Awards is a celebration of Black excellence, and fashion is a vital part of that celebration. This year’s red carpet was filled with attempts at bold fashion choices, but many of them fell flat.

The key takeaway from this year’s event is that the red carpet is about more than just the outfit—it’s about knowing your boundaries and being able to push them effectively. Fashion is all about taking risks, but it’s crucial to do so with a clear understanding of what works. For next year, we hope to see more daring looks that hit the mark, fewer misses, and overall, a stronger fashion game at the MOBOs.
