Megan Thee Stallion's Journey Explored in New Documentary
"In Her Words"
Megan Thee Stallion's path to stardom and her personal struggles are the focus of In Her Words, a new documentary from Amazon MGM Studios. The documentary, directed by Nneka Onuorah, is set to premiere on Halloween and offers an intimate look at Megan's life, both as an artist and as a person.
A two-minute trailer for the documentary, produced in collaboration with TIME Studios and Roc Nation, was released on Wednesday. In it, Megan opens up about a particularly difficult period in her life. Reflecting on the pressure she was under, Megan asks, “I feel like, how can I be Megan Thee Stallion when I’m not having fun?” The trailer reveals that during this time, she felt overwhelmed to the point of wanting to cancel her scheduled shows.
Megan credits much of her inspiration to her late mother, Holly Thomas, who was also a rapper. “Music has always been in my life,” Megan says in the trailer. “I wouldn’t be here without my mom. My momma was like a gangster rapper. I was like, when I get older I really wanna be like her. That’s when I really started creating Megan Thee Stallion. That was when I was my happiest.”
However, in 2019, Megan’s mother passed away, leaving her devastated. “When life started getting crazy, I didn’t have her,” Megan explains, recalling the emotional toll and the breakdown she experienced during this difficult time in her career. But her alter-ego, Megan Thee Stallion, became a shield for her. “I think Megan Thee Stallion is trying to protect Megan Pete,” she reveals.
In Her Words, produced by Carmen Cee and Mackenzie Hill, will debut on Prime Video on October 31, just in time for Halloween. Megan plans to celebrate the release with her annual "Hottieween" event in Chicago, adding a festive touch to the documentary's launch.
