Maison Margiela x Gentle Monster Wants Your Glasses To Look A Little Broken
Taking familiar eyewear shapes apart and putting them back together in unexpected ways.
Eyewear can change the entire mood of an outfit, but there's a difference between finding a frame that suits your face and finding one that makes people look twice. I'm much more interested in the second category when a design has a reason to be unusual. Otherwise, oversized sunglasses are just oversized sunglasses.
For their fourth collaboration, Maison Margiela and Gentle Monster are taking familiar eyewear shapes apart and putting them back together in unexpected ways. The 68-piece collection includes 43 sunglasses styles and 25 optical frames, with exaggerated proportions, distorted silhouettes, and leather-wrapped designs that look caught somewhere between construction and deconstruction.
Imperfection Is the Point

Some frames appear crushed or reshaped, while others expand into oversized, almost mask-like forms. At the opposite end are narrower silhouettes wrapped in leather, creating a close-fitting finish that feels more like a second skin than a conventional pair of glasses. Maison Margiela's signature four white stitches appear along the temples, with some slimmer designs making the detail look as though it floats around the frame.
What interests me about this approach is how it challenges the idea that accessories should always look finished. Eyewear is usually judged on symmetry, polish, and whether it complements the face. These designs play with the possibility that a frame can be compelling precisely because it looks a little wrong.
That doesn't mean every unconventional shape automatically works. Statement eyewear has to earn its place because it sits right in the middle of your face. But when the proportions feel intentional, a pair of glasses can do more for an outfit than another carefully chosen accessory ever could.
Not Every Pair Needs to Be Wearable in the Obvious Way

The collection moves between dramatic volume and more restrained shapes, which makes the collaboration more interesting than a lineup of oversized sunglasses alone. The bolder frames can become the focal point of an otherwise simple outfit, while the narrower styles offer a subtler way into the collection's experimental design language.
I'd approach these pieces as objects with personality rather than neutral finishing touches. A sculptural frame doesn't need an equally elaborate outfit competing for attention. Sometimes a plain coat, a clean shirt, or a minimal black look gives an unusual accessory enough room to speak for itself.
The campaign, directed by filmmaker Alex Prager, follows a protagonist rushing through an ever-changing city, encountering a cast of characters wearing different silhouettes. The shifting world mirrors the collection's central idea: familiar forms can become something else when their structures are disrupted.
A New Shape of Everyday Eyewear

Maison Margiela x Gentle Monster launches October 29, 2026, through both brands' websites, alongside pop-up installations in eight cities, including Paris, Seoul, Tokyo, and Melbourne. Prices on Gentle Monster's US site range from approximately $400 to $500, depending on the style.
That's a serious investment for something that sits on your nose, so the appeal has to go beyond a recognizable collaboration name. The strongest designs here offer a distinct point of view, turning a functional object into part of the outfit's identity.
The most interesting accessory isn't the one that completes the look. It's the one that makes you rethink the look in the first place.
