Mad About Mod Makeup

With Twiggy trending on Tiktok, here’s how to make the viral makeup style your own.

The '60s are back (on our eyelids, that is,) and we’re digging it. But, don’t flip your lid if you haven’t mastered mod makeup yet. You’re gonna look groovy after these three steps:

Step 1: Liner

Start by sweeping eyeshadow primer from your upper lash line to below the brow to make sure your look stays in place. Once you’ve primed, the first step to the classic Edie Sedgwick eye is liner, and this step may not be too different from what you’re used to. Grab a liquid or felt tip eyeliner, and draw a thin line right on your upper lash line, winging it out just a little at the outer corner. Makeup artist, Tommy (tommymakeup_) says that the wing "should be drawn down instead of up with the natural slope of the eye."

Step 2: Crease

The dramatic, graphic cut crease, is definitely a statement, but stars like Dodie Clark and Lily Rose Depp make it look modern and cool. To go full-drama, Tommy told Allure, you should take your liquid liner and "put a dot near the end of the crease but just above it, then one in the center of the eye [above the crease], and another at the start [or inner part] of the crease.” Then, connect those dots with your favorite kohl liner. For the full Twiggy-effect, extend your eyeliner wings, and meet your crease line.

Step 3: Lashes

Big, fanned out lashes are key to this look. (Think Anya Taylor-Joy in The Queen’s Gambit.) Start by applying nude or white eyeliner or eyeshadow to the waterline. Next, curl those lashes, and pile on the mascara followed by a layer of liquid liner on the lashes, themselves. If you’re going full-mod, draw your own skinny, cartoonish bottom lashes on your skin with liquid liner. And, if you’re a falsie-fan, finish off with your favorite fake lashes. (The bigger, the better!)

Add a little lip gloss and maybe a mini skirt, and you’re officially modern mod girl material.
