LVLV's "Popcorn": The Electric Thrill Of Anticipation Before The Date

Building desire and embracing experimentation.

POSTED BY ZOE TYLER

LVLV’s latest single, “Popcorn”, captures the electric thrill of anticipation — that moment just before a date when everything feels charged with possibility. It’s not about love or heartbreak, but the teasing, playful space in between. With sleek production, irresistible hooks, and a confident sensuality, “Popcorn” is a vibe you can feel in your skin. We had the pleasure of a Q&A to get to know about how it came to be.

Your new track “Popcorn” feels like it lives in that exact moment before anything happens — the thrill of the almost. Was that the emotional sweet spot you were aiming for?

Definitely. I think a lot of us know that electric feeling right before going on a date and meeting someone new. Your whole body tingles – it’s like little jolts of electricity running through you. You’re excited, nervous, and not really sure what to expect. You just feel alive. I tried to capture that exact feeling and turn it into a song.

The song pulses with flirtation and control — a kind of smooth tension. How do you translate a mood like that into beats, textures, and production choices?

It’s definitely a challenge when you have a creative idea and want to bring it to life – both through lyrics and in the production of the music. That’s really the art: finding a way to combine both and get the message across to the listener. The producer I work with, Jano, really understands me and my vision. He always finds a way to match my ideas and lyrics with the right beats.

The title “Popcorn” is playful, but the vibe is more charged than snack-time. What’s the metaphor here — is this about desire building to a pop?

Exactly. It’s also about how you might already know a bit about the other person’s preferences before the date – and that makes you even more electrified, more nervous, but also super excited.

You’ve been teasing this track on TikTok and Instagram with a cheeky energy. How important is it for your audience to feel your songs before they hear them fully?

Visuals are definitely really important to me – and they need to match the vibe of my music. As an independent artist, it’s not always easy to create exactly what you imagine on a limited budget. OF COURSE, Ideally, I’d love to have an highly produced music video for every release. But for now, I try to create authentic visuals with an urban feel that reflect the message and mood of my songs.

Would you say “Popcorn” marks a shift for you sonically or thematically — or is this more like turning up the volume on something you’ve always had inside?

Popcorn is another track where I allowed myself to experiment. I don’t like being put into a box or tied down to one genre or sound. I love trying new things and being versatile – and that’s something I want my music to reflect. I’m never just one version of myself: one day I’m introverted and reflective, the next I’m outgoing and feel alive, ready to share all my thoughts with the world. I find it hard to settle on just one thing – and in a way, I think that shows up in my music too.

“Popcorn” is out now and streaming on all major platforms. LVLV, formerly known as Lulu, continues her evolution with bold, honest pop grounded in experience and edge. Dive into the moment. Listen now!
