Korean Skincare: A Trend Or A Lifestyle?

Is it really a miracle in a bottle?

POSTED BY ELLA PROSSER

If you’re into your skincare, then you’ve most definitely heard of Korean skincare. And if you haven’t, where have you been?!?

Korean women are known for their beautifully flawless skin and ability to maintain a youthful appearance as they age. Some may accredit this to blessed genetics, but it is largely due to an advanced skincare routine that is not just a daily practice, but a cultural phenomenon. Koreans are educated on the importance of skincare from an early age, especially on the daily use of SPF to protect the skin from harmful UV damage. The prevention of skin issues plays a big part in achieving that healthy glow.

Korean skincare has become increasingly popular in Western culture as more and more people strive for perfect skin. It’s a trend that has grown significantly on TikTok with influencers preaching the benefits of using K-beauty brands and experimenting with new skincare routines.

What makes Korean skincare different?

So, what’s the big secret? Korean skincare is minimalistic. It is formulated with natural ingredients proven to hydrate and nourish the skin, such as snail mucin, seaweed, rice water, bamboo extract, heartleaf, and aloe vera. Some of these ingredients may sound fancy, but they are simple, and that’s why they are so effective. They feed the skin with essential nutrients that improve its health and appearance.

There are no harsh chemicals or strong fragrances, and nearly all K-beauty products are vegan and cruelty-free.

However, it’s not all about the ingredients. It’s also about consistency. To receive the best results from this style of skincare, you must follow a routine, have patience, and adopt healthy skin habits.

How can I practice Korean skincare?

Essential components of a Korean skincare include double cleansing with oil-based and water-based cleansers, the religious use of SPF, a hydrating moisturizer, and targeted treatments that nurture the skin.

A traditional Korean skincare routine consists of 10 steps:

  1. Oil-based Cleanser - Removes makeup and dirt without disrupting the skin’s natural oils.
  2. Water-based Cleanser - Deeply cleanses pores and removes impurities.
  3. Exfoliant (a few times a week) - Removes dead skin cells.
  4. Toner - Encourages a balanced pH and moistures the skin.
  5. Essence - Hydrates and protects.
  6. Serum - Treats skin issues or problem areas.
  7. Sheet Mask (a few times a week) - Hydrates and nourishes.
  8. Eye Cream - Prevents wrinkles, reduces puffiness, and brightens under-eyes.
  9. Moisturiser - Hydrates and helps the skin absorb nutrients.
  10. SPF - Protects the skin by reducing sun damage.

With an optional extra 2 steps:

11.  Facial Mist - Reactivates the products used and contributes to a “glass skin” finish.

12.  Maintenance Facials - Weekly visits to professionals to receive skin treatments and massages.

Which products should I buy?

The Korean skincare products you invest in should be carefully chosen based on your skin type and problem areas. It’s highly recommended that you research before purchasing — consider your skin type and skin needs, and always learn how to use your products correctly.
