Kendall Jenner’s Tequila Company Is Being Sued
This isn’t the first time the model’s business venture has got her into trouble.
Kendall Jenner has found herself in the middle of another controversy surrounding her drinks brand, 818 Tequila. Established just last year, the company had had a rocky start.
Since announcing the birth of 818, there have been a multitude of accusations aimed at the company. Jenner was targeted on Tik Tok for wrongly pronouncing the name of her aged tequila contributing to a larger issue of cultural appropriation around the brand.
Many were angry that Jenner was potentially taking away from smaller, Mexico based tequila companies. Outraged that a multi-millionaire was inserting themselves into another culture to make a profit, people had no problem calling the reality star on social media.
This time however, it’s not the court of public opinion Jenner needs to be worried about, it’s actual court.
The parent company of 818, K & Soda LLC, has been served a lawsuit by Tequila 512. Jenner’s brand has been accused of copying the smaller tequila brand. Both incorporate the area codes in which they are based, also using a similar minimalist style on their labels.
Tequila 512’s lawyers have accused Jenner of using deliberately ambiguous branding to eclipse the brand.
A spokesperson for 818 Tequila has rejected the allegations made against the company. Although Kendall has not officially been named as a defendant in 512’s case, it will be interesting to see how she chooses to respond to the lawsuit.
