Why the British actress views the male gaze as a problem in sex scenes…

Keira Knightley revealed on the new Chanel Connects podcast a no-nudity clause she has added to her movie contracts since giving birth to her two daughters Edie 5, and Delilah 1

The British-born actress told director Lulu Wang that she feels uncomfortable trying to portray the male gaze, “saying that, there's times where I go, 'Yeah, I completely see where this sex would be really good in this film and you basically just need somebody to look hot’, so therefore you can use somebody else.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean actress also claimed motherhood to be another reason why she doesn’t feel the need to bare all. “I'm too vain and the body has had two children now and I'd just rather not stand in front of a group of men naked. I don’t have an absolute ban, but I kind of do with men.”

Despite Knightley’s change of direction, she was critically acclaimed for her role in the 2007 movie Atonement which she is famously remembered for her steamy love scene with cast member James McAvoy

Director Joe Wright “choreographed the scene within an inch of its life,” The actress told vulture.com “It was absolutely, ‘Foot goes up there, hand goes up there.’ So both me and James felt utterly comfortable and not exposed, and like we could deal with it. It’s never gonna be fun, but we could deal with it.”

Knightley 35, expressed her interest in working on a female-directed production and the possibility of exploring themes of motherhood and the post-natal body. Due to the nature of the storyline, Knightley feels the necessity of a female director is an absolute must. "If I was making a story that was about that journey of motherhood and body acceptance, I feel like, I'm sorry, but that would have to be with a female film-maker.”

Since the rise of the #Metoo movement in 2006, many other actresses have fallen suit such a Forgetting Sarah Marshall’s Kristen Bell and Pretty Little Liars actress Ashley Benson. Both expressed reasons relating to how they were viewed by the male gender and how they firmly did not want to be categorized as just a naked body.

Knightly is married to Klaxon’s keyboard player James Righton with whom she shares her two children. Could we be expecting an all-female cast, female-led production from Knightley in the future? We damn well hope so!
