Iris Van Herpen Fall 2024 Couture: Art to Admire

Presented in a gallery-like space.

Iris Van Herpen looked for a new way to debut the house’s latest Fall 2024 Couture collection in a gallery-like space titled Hybrid Show that featured five dresses alongside four large-scale artworks.

To match the gallery, the pieces appeared as pieces of artwork with the models emerging from impasto-covered canvases.

“I really needed to bring the two worlds of art and fashion even closer together,” Van Herpen explained as visitors trained their smartphones on the live-action panels. “The interdisciplinary approach that I have is ongoing, but I really wanted to push it a step further.”

Bring the two worlds of art and fashion together she did. Four dresses were built on tulle transparent panels that stretched between steel tubing. The designer embroidered pearls in cyclone-like formations or delicate lace onto this (rather delicately may we add) while dramatic sleeves, ruffles, or a frothy train added the drama tacked to the canvas.

Elsewhere, models such as Coco Rocha were writhing against white canvases with their feet anchored to white pumps visible from the bottoms of the panels. While there was plenty to feast your eyes open, it was the statement gown Rocha was adorned in that perhaps spoke the most.

Her golden gown had whorled fabric that jutted out from one hip and one sleeve. That was not all as a high-thigh slit added to the detail fit for a winning red carpet appearance. Zendaya, Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift, any takers?

The wackiness did not stop there. Van Herpen also used a heat gun to sculpt one of her transparent gowns with a glistening bodice and tentacles of sheer fabric that connected the hips and the wrists. You read that right, a heat gun.

She left plenty to admire, desire, and consider art. What another impressive feat for the designer to add to her already long list.
