Introducing the Nike Jam: The Ultimate Shoe for Breakers

Designed for peak performance and style in breaking.

POSTED BY ZOE TYLER

Nike has always been at the forefront of athletic innovation, but their latest creation might just be the coolest yet. Say hello to the Nike Jam, the first shoe designed specifically for the breakdancing community. This groundbreaking release is set to coincide with breaking's debut on the world stage, and it’s more than just a shoe—it's a celebration of culture, style, and movement.

The Nike Jam isn't just any sneaker. It’s the product of six years of meticulous research and development at the Nike Sport Research Lab, with direct input from breakers at all levels. This shoe is engineered to maximize performance on both smooth competition surfaces and rougher terrains like concrete and asphalt. Its foam drop-in midsole provides top-notch cushioning, while the rubber cupsole ensures that close-to-the-ground feel crucial for those intricate moves.

Nike athlete Logan "Logistx" Edra raves about the shoe’s traction and durability, highlighting the unique upside-down Swoosh that symbolizes the dynamic and often inverted moves in breaking. She calls it “one of the dopest details” and appreciates how the design pays homage to the sport with elements like reflectors, mesh, and varied fabric textures.

Nike didn't just stop at performance; they infused the Jam with serious style. The black and gum colorway is a nod to the essential equipment of hip-hop DJs and MCs, while the tan and black version pays tribute to the cardboard mats that breakers have long used to cushion their moves. The standout, however, might be the white and black colorway designed in collaboration with artist Futura, featuring a fresh take on his iconic 1980 Break Train piece.

Futura’s involvement doesn’t end with the shoes. He’s also lent his creative vision to a full suite of apparel, including federation kits for the United States, Korea, and Japan. Each piece is designed for durability and mobility, with thoughtful details like reinforced high-wear areas and lengthened sleeves and pant legs for unrestricted movement. The inclusion of Nike Dri-FIT ADV technology ensures athletes stay cool and dry, even during the most intense sessions.

Nike and Futura’s collaboration goes beyond aesthetics. Their shared goal is to bring breakers together on the global stage. The federation kits, while unique to each country, share a cohesive design language and a hidden message inside: “connecting souls across the world who move with the rhythm.”

This collection is not just for the athletes but also for the fans of hip-hop culture worldwide. It reflects a deep respect for the roots of breaking and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and performance.

The Nike Jam and select apparel will be available globally starting July 16 at nike.com and select retail stores. The federation kits for the USA, Korea, and Japan will hit stores on August 1. And if you’re eyeing the exclusive Nike Jam Futura colorway, mark your calendars for Fall 2024.
