Gothic Characters That Actually Got Fashion Right
Their outfits live in my head rent-free.
My admiration for gothic characters started in childhood, when I got acquainted with Sam Manson from Danny Phantom and just fell in love with her look. Since then, whenever I see a new edgy figure, I usually add them to my list of favorites. And, of course, briefly consider changing my entire wardrobe to match the aesthetic. If you’re anything like me, here are some of the most memorable characters to get inspiration from. There will be a lot of Tim Burton creations in the list, so don't say I didn't warn you.
Wednesday Addams (Wednesday)
When I think of the Gothic style, Wednesday is the first that comes to my mind now. While Morticia is a true icon—no doubt about that—her wardrobe can feel a little repetitive, often revolving around the same long black dress, both in the movie and the TV series. Wednesday, on the other hand, gave us a range of looks throughout the show. I love how her style blends gothic with dark academia, highlighting her difference from her family and her thirst for knowledge.

Nancy Downs (The Craft)
The Craft is the ultimate movie to watch if you love a witchy aesthetic. And honestly, picking just one of the girls was no easy task, as they all delivered unforgettable ‘90s fashion moments. That iconic walk in matching outfits alone is worth mentioning. But I feel like Nancy deserves the title of the boldest of the group, leaning the furthest into that darker vibe. And it wasn’t just about her clothes: her smoky makeup and chunky jewelry played a big role too.

Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)
Perhaps Mrs. Lovett had the worst pies in London—well, until she added her special ingredient, if you know what I mean—but she definitely knew how to dress. What I love most is the mix of Victorian style with a sharper, more dramatic edge, which, if you ask me, is always a winning combination. The draping, corset, top hat, and lace details made her look truly unforgettable.

Lydia Deetz (Beetlejuice)
Well, I wasn’t lying about the Tim Burton overload, was I? Lydia is basically one of the pioneers of modern gothic fashion. Her all-black outfits reflect her moody personality and the constant search for something beyond the ordinary. And I absolutely love how her look stayed consistent in the sequel without that unnecessary adult glow-up. It’s safe to say that her outfits in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice feel just as impressive as in the original.

Katrina Van Tassel (Sleepy Hollow)
Who said gothic style has to be all about dark colors? Katrina proves it can exist in a lighter palette as well. Her dresses combine romantic, ethereal, and slightly mysterious elements, creating a really beautiful contrast. And it feels kind of symbolic: the delicate touches reflect her fair features while the darker details hint at the mysterious, slightly chilling atmosphere of the town she lives in.

Jade West (Victorious)
And, of course, I couldn’t possibly leave out the ultimate punk queen. Jade was one of the coolest characters on Nickelodeon, to the point that we didn’t see her as the antagonist of the story. She gave us iconic sassy comebacks, great performances, and, most importantly, the coolest outfits. And honestly, I’d love a spin-off about adult Jade just to see how her style has evolved.

Let me guess: you’re now seriously thinking about adding a few gothic-inspired pieces to your wardrobe, aren’t you? If so, check out my Fizzypicks for the best options in this aesthetic.
