When I roll out of bed at 8 a.m. to walk down the block to the gym, I’m just as unmotivated to put on anything beyond a black bra and leggings as I am actually to work out. I throw on the first thing I see because, even though my college campus gym will be packed with familiar faces, it still feels too early to care about impressing anyone.

But when I have a 4 p.m. pilates class, and suddenly everyone is dressed to the nines in coordinated athleisure, I always come prepared in my best (and only) matching set. Every week, I am humbled both by the reformer and by the lack of athletic attire in my closet.
While I’m on a mission to fulfill my new year’s workout resolutions, I’m also working to up my activewear game. Not only do I want to look good in a matching set, but I also want layers and staples that make the post-workout outfit feel intentional and functional.

I’ll be showing up to class both for myself and for the two-piece sets, layered tanks, fold-over shorts, and maybe even one pant leg rolled up for no real reason. And once the workout ends, the look shouldn’t. That’s where wrap tops, boat-neck long sleeves, and lightweight windbreakers come in — the pieces that take you from mat to matcha without a full outfit change.

I want that just-left-rehearsal ballerina energy where the layers are loose, but the base is still sleek. I’m not trying to be a perfect Pilates princess anymore. I want my looks to feel a little undone, like working out is just second nature. The goal is for my outfits to feel effortless, as if movement is built into the clothes themselves.
