Denmark Has Been Ranked The Least Feminist Nation In The World

Only 1 in 6 Danes consider themselves a feminist.

POSTED BY HANNAH MASSEY

Denmark is considered by many an idyllic place to live. With equal employment rights, a slim gender pay gap, happy female retirees and exceptional nursery care, Denmark is setting an example to other countries in regards to equal rights.

However, in a recent global survey in relation to the #MeToo movement and gender differences, Denmark was actually found to be one of the least feminist countries in the world with 1 in 6 Danes classing themselves as feminists.

In a poll conducted by YouGov-Cambridge Globalism Project, 25,000 people in 23 countries were included in the study. The results were surprising and found that not all Dane women wish to be equal to men in all senses. Some suggested that modern feminism is hard to define, and that cat-calling is seen as more flattering than degrading and have suggested that cat-calling is harmless unless done with deliberate sexist intent.

The equality minister of Denmark, Karen Ellemann, expressed that she only began to class herself as a feminist when she took up the post three years ago. Even more surprisingly, almost two in five women in Denmark disapproved of the #MeToo movement, which is a complete contrast to Sweden whose media treated the movement as a political incident.

In some ways, Denmark sets an example to other countries, however, in terms of gender politics there is potentially work to be done. Let us know your thoughts on the equality issue in Denmark!
