Charli D'amelio's Controversial Coachella Look
What she is telling us with it.
Charli D’amelio has been in the public eye for years. She reached unimagined levels of fame, for an influencer, as a teenager. She's been largely uncontroversial and hasn't caused a stir for a long time. Until now.
Her day two Coachella look has taken the world by storm and discussions have been popping up all over the Internet. The outfit itself was fairly simple and stylish, a white maxi dress with black combat boots.
The issue arises, for some people, in the fact that the dress was sheer.
The first issue with the sheerness is that she wore black underwear. This isn't a fashion disaster in our eyes, the dress is white but all the accents are black. Her hair is black, the spots on her dress are black, and her boots are black. All in all the outfit ties together really well.
The second, more prominent issue is that she's too young for a dress like that. We disagree, we think this is precisely why she wore the dress, this is her way of signaling to all of us that she isn't a child anymore. Because of her rise to fame happening when she was so young she has, like many before her, remained a child in the eyes of the public. So, like many before her, she has made a somewhat bold statement, taking hold of her adulthood and forcing everyone to see her for how she really is. This stand is far more calm and understated than many others who have had to shed their childhood personas, and it works really well to communicate who she is now. She is expressing her adulthood with clothing from the essay catalogue, signaling a departure from her childhood persona.
Charlie is a grown woman. She has the right to dress how she pleases. And how she pleases is put together, summer-ready, and cool.
