Why I'm Dressing Like A Bratz Doll
How childhood icons are inspiring my Y2K wardrobe.
Despite being more of a Barbie lover as a kid, the fashion of Bratz dolls really caught my attention as I got older.
Very fitting for the name, Bratz dolls all dress in outfits full of attitude, taking maximalism to the next level with their attention-grabbing looks. While each girl had her own individual taste, they all shared a very Y2K feel in their clothing, so it’s no surprise that they seem so cool to me now, as an adult with Y2K fashion trending again.
The core four — Yasmin, Cloe, Sasha, and Jade — all represent a different element of Y2K fashion.

Yasmin, my personal favorite, dresses in very feminine silhouettes, fabrics, and colors. Rarely caught in a pair of trousers, she favors silky dresses, ruffled lace skirts, and sequined tops. She’s basically the epitome of everything I'm loving in fashion at the moment — I’d kill for her wardrobe!
Cloe opts for matching sets and denim pieces, dressing the most Barbie-like out of the four, which feels very fitting considering her bright blonde hair. Sasha incorporates lots of bold prints and colors into her clothing, with a style that feels sporty thanks to her iconic jerseys and moto jackets. Last but certainly not least, Jade is the most alternative of the girls, wearing lots of dark, grungy colors, with fishnet tights making a common appearance.

One of my favorite ways to refresh my wardrobe when I'm bored of my clothes, instead of just buying new ones, is to literally play dress up like I would with my dolls as a kid. I’ll try a piece that I’m struggling to style with practically everything else in my wardrobe, layering to the max! While some of the outfits are hilariously outrageous, I often find unexpected combinations that I end up loving.
It’s also such a great way to reconnect with yourself and your personal style, which naturally grows and evolves over time. There’s something so nostalgic about rediscovering clothes that hold memories and experimenting with them in a completely new way. Above all else, it’s a chance to reconnect with your inner child.
Growing up playing with dolls with such inspiring, unique clothing, it’s no wonder our generation is so obsessed with fashion. Maybe the secret to finding your personal style was hiding in our childhood toy boxes all along.
