How Figure Skating Has Shaped My Look
The costumes are just too pretty.
When I was little, I always wanted to be an ice skater. I thought they were so graceful, gliding around the rink in their colorful costumes. When I ask myself what has inspired my style today, I'm realizing that professional figure skaters may have had a bigger influence on me than I thought.
For one thing, I love color. Why fade into the scenery when you could be the center of attention? When I picture figure skaters in their performance attire, I think of bright pinks, golds, and blues popping against the ice, or funky textures and silhouettes that are impossible to ignore.
I also love the structure of the clothing, especially how many figure skating costumes are built around leotards with specific areas of fluidity, like tassels around the waist. It reminds me of the trend of asymmetric ruffles hanging from dresses and skirts, or the bedazzled leotards of pop stars — essentially, all of my favorite things rolled into one.
