Blackpink’s Jennie Announces First Full-Length Studio Album
She’s going solo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo!
Almost 7 years since her debut single “Solo,” Jennie Kim, known mononymously as Jennie, will finally release her first full-length studio album.
The idol rapper/singer is widely known for her work with superstar girl group Blackpink and has gained new attention through her recent acting endeavors. (You may know her as Dyanne in the HBO television series The Idol.)
But now, the 29-year-old will be focusing mainly on her solo music.
The news comes after her Instagram post on Jan. 21, which contained a black and red teaser video announcing her first studio album. Around 30 seconds long, the clip features stunning visuals of a redheaded Kim— fittingly, as the album’s name is Ruby (seemingly a nod to her alter ego and acting stage name, Jennie Ruby Jane).
The teaser also contains an ominous beat and phrases like “In the dark, I grew” and “Money cannot buy no real friends.” And, if you listen closely, you can get a taste of Jennie’s haunting vocals expected to feature on the album.
Ruby will be made up of 15 tracks, one being the lead single Mantra (released in Oct. 2024). It will also contain collaborations with artists like Childish Gambino, Doechii, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, FKJ, and Kali Uchis.
In an interview with Billboard, Jennie explained the direction for this album, stating, “I’m playing with a lot of different genres and elements. I’m rapping here, I’m singing here, I’m harmonizing here, I’m talking here.” In other words, listeners can expect it to be just as versatile as she is.
Ruby will release on March 7th in partnership with Columbia Records under Jennie’s self-established label Odd Atelier. In the meantime, listeners can revisit Kim’s past works like “One of the Girls” and “You & Me” to prepare for what’s soon to come.
