Best Movies About The Most Powerful Fashion Figures
Let’s explore the lives of the biggest names in the industry.
Biography is one of my favorite genres in movies, as I believe the life stories of influential people in any field are just as meaningful as their inventions or creations. Watching how they managed to navigate difficulties and struggles before reaching remarkable success is truly motivating. There are many good films about famous personalities who shaped the fashion industry. Here are the most memorable ones that are worth watching.
House of Gucci (2021)
A girl from a modest background, Patrizia, meets Maurizio, the heir of the Gucci fashion dynasty, and quickly falls in love. Soon they get married, but they don’t get to live their “happily ever after”, as the story gets a darker turn when Patrizia becomes involved in the family business. I honestly didn’t expect a biographical drama to turn into a full crime thriller filled with intrigues and hidden secrets, but it made the movie even more captivating.

Coco Before Chanel (2009)
Today, Coco Chanel is remembered as one of the most elegant icons who revolutionized women’s fashion, creating comfortable yet no less elegant clothes. But her life wasn’t always that glamorous: she was raised in an orphanage and later worked hard as a seamstress for a cabaret show before gradually moving toward her ambitions and goals. And should I also mention that Audrey Tautou made an amazing Chanel? Sometimes, when I think of Coco, it’s Audrey’s image that comes to my mind first.

Yves Saint Laurent (2014)
The story begins in 1958, when Yves Saint Laurent was only 21 years old and just entering the fashion world. Before launching his own company with his partner Pierre Berge, he became the creative director of the House of Dior after Christian’s death. What makes this movie truly remarkable is its versatility, showing not only Laurent’s professional rise but his relationship with Berge, his struggles, breakdowns, and personal battles as well.

Dior and I (2014)
Moving on to the 21st century. Dior and I follow designer Raf Simons, who became the sixth director of the House of Dior in 2012. The movie gives us a closer look at the intense process behind creating his debut haute couture collection. I love how such films give us a better understanding of how the fashion world works, reminding us that creating meaningful clothing is far from simple. It really makes us rethink our attitude towards what we purchase.

The September Issue (2009)
Even though this movie isn’t focused on a designer, I couldn’t leave it out, as it features one of the most powerful figures in fashion, aka Anna Wintour. In 2007, she oversaw the biggest issue of Vogue ever published, which became a major milestone in the industry. The documentary takes us behind the scenes of that demanding process, showing how the growing pressure and internal conflicts shaped the creation of the legendary September Issue.
