Fashion As A Political Canvas
How celebrity figures have used fashion to spark conversation for recent events.
The Oxford Dictionary definition of fashion is: a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behavior.
In reality, it is much more than that. Fashion can be used to make political statements. In our current world, where war, illness, and hate crimes are headlining the news daily, political fashion is needed now more than ever.
Bella Hadid Palestinian Kiffiyeh
Amidst the Israel-Gaza war, highly sought-after model Bella Hadid used the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to show her support for Palestinians. She wore a Kiffiyeh dress made by Michael and Hushi in 2001. In an Instagram caption, she explained that the red and white dress represented “history, labor of love, resilience and, most importantly, the art of historic Palestinian embroidery.” By wearing the dress at a high-profile event, she made people pay attention to the ongoing conflict.
Emily Ratajkowski Stormy Daniels T-Shirt
As former president Donald Trump received a guilty verdict for 34 felony counts, Em Rata stepped out in a black t-shirt printed with the face of Stormy Daniels. The adult film star and filmmaker was paid $130,000 for her silence about her affair with Trump ahead of his 2016 presidential campaign. Em Rata supported Daniels by using fashion and prompted conversation by doing so.
Fashion is more than shopping and trends, it has the power to open conversation and change narratives.
