The Growing Political Gap And The Dating Scene
Is the growing popularity of extreme political views going to affect your chance of finding love?
Anyone who's in the dating scene or is around people who might have noticed it's gotten worse. Now of course the art of finding love isn't simple and there are many factors that play into it but we cannot deny the importance of politics. Political values are becoming more and more central to people's identity
Unfortunately men and women, especially young men and women, are increasingly political in the opposite direction. Women are polling as growing slightly more liberal, whereas men are growing significantly more conservative. This gap is the worst it has been in the last 25 years. This gap affects unmarried young people more than their married counterparts, married women poll more conservative.
There are a number of things that could be causing this gap, but its effects are undeniable. People are not willing to date far out of their political sphere. This is understandable especially for the more liberal community, with rightwing folks wanting to revoke rights, the best example of this is the revoking of Row vs. Wade which affects people everywhere. Who would want to date someone who didn't want to advocate for your rights.
The biggest problem with this issue is how it's viewed. People outside the dating scene often view political views as simply a small part of someone's personality. But this is simplifying it too far. When people say what they are looking for they usually say ‘treating others with respect’ and ‘keeping an open mind’, but research suggests that these values are directly connected to political views. To see someone as shallow for ruling out certain political leanings is lacking in understanding of how intertwined politics is with every element of our lives.
