Austin Butler’s Off-Duty Street Style

The modern icon of understated menswear sophistication.

POSTED BY MIA DEEMING

In the golden age of Hollywood, there were James Dean, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, and Marlon Brando; in 2025, we have Austin Butler. With all the unforgettable charm of a 1950s heartthrob, Butler cannot escape our screens with his timeless and captivating look. He is known more for his debonair personality and growing acting portfolio than his fashion choices, but there is something to be said that, both during public appearances and candid paparazzi photos, he oozes understated sophistication; his look is ultimately classic.

Outerwear

Austin is a master at layering. On many occasions, he has been spotted wearing a peacoat, which he layers with neutral jumpers or a hoodie. Though his outfit may be casual underneath, his addition of an overcoat ultimately creates a sophisticated look.

He is also no stranger to a Carhartt jacket, which seems to be a staple in Butler’s wardrobe. The Carhartt jacket has been making its way into many celebrities’ off-duty looks since last year, also being worn by Paul Mescal and Drew Starkey. Butler’s jackets are often vintage and from the early 2000s, making them rare and difficult to track down, but not for Austin, as he seems to have a growing, impressive collection full of discontinued jackets. He often pairs a Carhartt jacket with jeans and a trucker hat, achieving an effortless rugged workwear look.

Recently, Butler has been seen wearing a distressed and cracked jacket on his way to The Tonight Show to promote his latest film, Caught Stealing. This jacket was layered over the latest menswear trend, the Henley shirt, adding a sleek, clean-cut look to the edge provided by the jacket.

Trousers

His wardrobe consists mainly of a neutral palette that often features blue accents. This is mostly from a staple pair of denim jeans, which are often a vintage pair of Levi’s. Butler’s go-to trouser silhouette is a classic high-waisted line, which exudes his old Hollywood style and is reminiscent of 1950s dress-trouser style. It’s no wonder Butler made it as the face of Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2025, as his style perfectly reflects Anthony Vaccarello's collection, which portrayed traditional, sleek suit styling, the epitome of Yves Saint Laurent’s style. Which Butler exudes in his everyday and formal looks.

Shoes

When Butler is photographed in public, he is either wearing trainers or a worker's boot. Austin was often a famous Adidas Samba wearer, but recently, on set for Caught Stealing, he was seen wearing the Puma Easy Rider in Black. This has sparked a debate about whether the costume department of Caught Stealing has found the trainer of the summer.

Butler also loves a pair of Redwing boots, though made for harsh working conditions, Butler adorns a pair for strutting down the street. Not just sticking to any one style, Butler has been seen wearing many variations, such as the Red Wing 952 and a pair of Red Wing Blacksmiths.

Caps

Perfect for keeping lowkey to onlooking paparazzi as well as giving effortless cool, Butler is rarely seen anywhere without a cap. Butler isn’t looking to name-drop, and his hats are rarely sporting a brand. During the release of The Bikeriders, Butler would often be seen in a retro Sturgis bike hat, and most of his hats are vintage, featuring subtle wear, just adding to his nonchalant look.

Simple accessories

Being one of the faces of Breitling watches, it is no surprise that Austin has a vast range of timepieces. Butler opts to wear a watch with a smaller face, providing a sleek and expensive look without being flashy. During an early screening of Caught Stealing in Puerto Rico, combined with his now-favourite style, Henley top Butler adorned a Breitling Chronomat 32 watch, a skinnier timepiece than many other luxury watches.

When it comes to jewellery, Butler has a minimal style, and the limit to his embellishment is often a simple silver chain. The most decorated Butler has been was at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in March 2023, when he wore a delicate Étincelle de Cartier diamond necklace.

Looking put together is hard to achieve, but Austin brings effortless ease to sophisticated menswear. He is both timeless and contemporary, making him ultimately classic on and off-screen.
