Boho Chic Is Millennial-Core- And That’s Why We Love It

In defence of 2010s polka dots, slouchy boots, and dressing for vibes.

Gen-Z and Millennials stay in a back-and-forth war on the internet: Who had the better childhood? Who had the better shows? Who had the better music? But one thing, as a Gen-Z myself, I must give the millennials their flowers for: their 2010s Boho Chic aesthetic. Truly a time where fashion was less about chasing trends or buying an outfit because you saw Alix Earle wear it, designer labels, and flashy gear, but more about personality. And honestly? Seeing a resurgence in this sort of dressing is exciting to witness!

What is Boho Chic, Anyway?

The best way I can describe it? Think back to High School and the outfits of that fun, quirky, artsy, English teacher you had. The outfits were a little messy, romantic, and deeply unserious. We’re talking bright, flowy silhouettes, tactile fabrics, frills, and outfits that look like they were built based off on instinct and not from a Pinterest board. Cardigans, knits, oversized glasses, low-slung belts, layered scarves. It’s fashion that swishes when you walk and looks better the more you live in it.

Zoey Deschanel Is the Blueprint

If 2010s boho chic had a patron saint, it would be Zoey Deschanel. Her New Girl wardrobe was a masterclass in millennial boho: quirky prints, soft materials, vintage denim, and footwear that always looked slightly worn-in (in a good way). The magic wasn’t in any single piece-it was in the feeling. Outfits were playful, expressive, and unapologetically personal.

How to make it work in 2026

The key to achieving Boho chic is letting go of polish. Embrace the mismatch, the texture, and the imperfection of it all.

My essentials for achieving the boho chic aesthetic:

1. Flowy midi skirts

2. Cap sleeve tops layered over long sleeve t-shirts

3. Slouchy boots

4. Knit cardigans

And lastly, it goes without saying- but lots of stripes and polka dots

In a fashion world obsessed with “clean” aesthetics and constant trend cycles, the Jessica Day boho chic feels like rebellion through joy.

Final Point- remember, calling it “millennial-core" isn’t an insult—it’s the point. Boho chic reminds us that fashion can be nostalgic, expressive, without being try-hard, and, most importantly, fun and whimsical. And maybe that’s why it’s back: not because we needed another revival, but because we missed getting dressed for ourselves.
