Jean Paul Gaultier’s Final Couture Show Serves Some Serious Star Power
The designer ends his 50-year career with a spectacular runway.
Iconic designer Jean Paul Gaultier ended his magnificent career at Paris Couture Week SS20 last night. The 50th anniversary haute couture show took place at the Théatre du Châtelet in Paris and featured some surprise cameos on the runway, such as the likes of Madonna (queen) and Dita von Teese (also queen). Paris Jackson also made her model debut at the show, which included a performance from the illustrious Boy George.
Familiar faces also turned it out on the runway, including Jourdan Dunn, Karlie Kloss and sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, sporting some of the 172-piece collection Gaultier designed for the show. Models who rose to fame during the 80s and 90s, such as Estelle Lefebure and Karen Elson, also walked the show, with Gaultier telling reporters backstage, “I feel so much love today with all those old models that came and wanted to make my show.”
The collection began with a heaven-inspired aesthetic, transforming into pieces presenting bold and vibrant colours, including tribal dresses and sailor-esque garments alongside Gaultier’s signature avant-garde designs. Supermodel Naomi Campbell took to twitter to express her gratitude for the designer, stating “The impact and inspiration you have left on this industry is beyond words. Creative visionary.”
