You Belong With Me Taylor

Welcome to the complete timeline of Taylor Swift’s boyfriends.

POSTED BY HANNAH COPE

Whether you love her or you don’t I think we all have to agree that Taylor has definitely got one of the most interesting love lives ever. And to put it in simple terms, we definitely wouldn’t mind having had a few of her exes.

For years and years we have been belting her eerily relatable breakup and love anthems whether that be in our bedrooms or in the club. But have you ever stopped to wonder who actually inspired these worldwide hits? Well, we have done the research you don’t have to. So, here it is, the timeline of Taylor Swift’s love life, grab the popcorn ladies and gentlemen.

Joe Jonas (2008)

Yup, Taylor dated a Jonas brother. Joe was Taylor’s first-ever public breakup, a breakup between two renowned popstars would of course have caught everyone’s eyes.

And our heart really goes out to Taylor because Joe decided it best to break up with her over a 27 SECOND PHONE CALL. Brutal. So, it probably comes as no surprise the brutal but very catchy tune ‘Mr. Perfectly Fine’ is written about Jonas alongside ‘Last Kiss’, ‘Forever and Always and later on ‘Holy Ground’ which viewed the breakup in a much more positive light.

Let this be a message to all the men out there that think it's best to break up with someone over the phone, you will be faced with a lot of backlash and anger. And very rightfully so. Even if you are Joe Jonas, it is never okay.

Lucas Till (2009)

All you Hannah Montana fans have to recognize this one. Taylor met Lucas on the set of Hannah Montana: The Movie, and they dated for only a matter of months in 2009. This Hollywood star is also known for playing the next-door neighbor in the incredible “You Belong With Me” music video.

To our knowledge there are no songs that are targeted towards Lucas Till, the relationship appears to have ended on friendly terms with the two stating they were simply ‘better off as friends’. I guess that’s a flex Till can carry with him, having escaped the wrath of a Taylor song, so a round of applause to him for not breaking our girl’s heart.

Taylor Lautner (2009)

Who could ever forget the Taylor/Taylor romance? The two undoubtedly stunning individuals met when co-starring as high school sweethearts in the rom com Valentines Day. Clearly Taylor likes to pick up her men when acting.

Lautner appeared to like her more than she liked him, with him going absolutely everywhere to see him. They dated for around three months before Swift dumped him as she figured they were better off as friends.

Swift’s song ‘Back To December’ is her version of an apology to Lautner for a rough night in December and the night she dumped him. Ouch.

John Mayer (2009)

She was 19 and he was 32, take from that what you wish. The pair collaborated on music together while they were dating, and in the years to come, would tear each other to shreds with their own lyrics.

‘Dear John’, Taylor’s 2010 song, was written for John Mayer. And its safe to say she was definitely not discrete when calling him out in this song. As Swifities know, Taylor never does anything accidentally, and this is very obvious within this song.

The most shocking part about all of this, Mayer actually spoke out. He stated the song was unfair and untrue. Before then releasing his own song ‘Paper Doll’ in 2013 which is undoubtedly targeted at Swift… quite hypocritical John.

Cory Monteith (2010)

Taylor and the late Glee star were never officially confirmed to be dating but there were many photographs of the two which suggested that they were and Taylor clearly brushed off and blushed at questions targeted at the pair. On the day of Cory’s tragic death in July 2013, Taylor tweeted ‘Speechless. And for the worst reason.’

Jake Gyllenhaal (2010-2011)

The most infamous relationship of hers and that is to put it lightly. The couple were regularly seen out in NYC and LA all loved up. Rumour has it that the relationship came to an end as a result of the age gap, something Taylor clearly brings up in the new ten-minute version of ‘All Too Well’.

The songs thought to be about Jake are: ‘All Too Well’. ‘The Moment I knew’, ‘State of Grace’, ‘Sad Beautiful Tragic’ and ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’.

I am sure many of you are aware about the infamous scarf which Gyllenhaal has been photographed in years since much to the amusement and confusion of Swift’s fans. Either way, I guess we can slightly thank Jake for all of the incredible songs we have managed to gain as a result of his supposedly awful ways, and even the recent ten-minute short film Taylor received for ‘All Too Well’.

Adam Young (2011)

You may recognise him from Owl City, Adam Young never officially dated Taylor, with things never escalating past some emails and one face-to-face meeting. Taylor was supposedly so excited to meet Adam that she later wrote the song ‘Enchanted’ about him. Which, even if you are not a huge Taylor fan, I am sure you have recently seen on TikTok with there being a trend of people screaming in the shower to it. Similar to Mayer, Young also responded to Taylor with his song, which included the lyrics ‘I was never in love with someone else/ I never had somebody waiting on me/ Taylor I was so in love with you.’

If only the exchange of love songs would have ended up with them back together, but no. It ended at that and the two moved on.

Chord Overstreet (2011)

Adding to her list, another Glee Star, Chord Overstreet. They reportedly only went on one date to a LA Kings NHL game and to dinner. But there were pictures from the occasion so he has to make the list, even if he can’t necessarily be considered an ‘ex’.

Eddie Redmayne (2011-2012)

It is rumored that Taylor and Eddie started dating when she auditioned for Les Miserables. They were seen a lot together in NYC whilst the auditions were taking place but that was it. Redmayne came out in 2016 to address the rumors between the two and we, unfortunately, have to break the news that Taylor and Eddie were never, ever, together.

Zac Efron (2012)

We must have been living under a rock because this one definitely came as a shock to us. The once High School Musical teenage stud was making everyone’s hearts skip prior to his run in with Tay and lets be honest he still is. Can you guess where they met? Yup, whilst filming. The two reportedly started dating for a few months while promoting their movie The Lorax. This may have just been a publicity stunt though, as the two have both since denied the relationship.

The pair even wrote a parody of Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, crushing all of our dreams. We can always just pretend they were a couple, it hurts a little less.

Conor Kennedy (2012)

Yup, Taylor dated none other than Robert F. Kennedy’s grandson during the Summer of 2012. There was slight criticism towards this relationship with her being 22 and Conor being 18, but where was this criticism towards the older men she was with previously? 4 years age gap is realistically nothing, especially when the two were both adults.

Taylor even purchased a home near the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, during the romance. She really seemed to be in love with him.

However, things ended abruptly when his family accused the young singer of crashing Conor’s cousins' wedding in August. Her reps denied it, but it appeared that by then all the damage had been done.

‘Begin Again’ and ‘Starlight’ are rumored to be about Kennedy. Specifically with the ‘Begin Again’ lyrics ‘ I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny ‘cause he never did’ linking closely to hers and Kennedy’s whirlwind romance. ‘Starlight’ is said to depict the relationship between her then-boyfriend’s grandmother, Ethel, and the grandfather he never met.

Harry Styles (2012-2013)

The one, the only, the Mr. Harry Styles. One of Taylor’s most divisive relationships to date. The couple, despite only dating for month, shared paper aeroplane necklaces, romantically strolled through central park and kissed in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. This relationship was not one either side wanted to deny, and can you blame them.

It is extremely well known that ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ is about the One Direction heartthrob. Taylor’s incredible album 1989 is also filled with endless subtle references to Styles, specifically ‘Style’ (subtle Taylor 😊) and ‘Out Of The Woods’ with its lyrical references to their December romance and their snowmobile accident.

Calvin Harris (2015-2016)

Harris was Taylor’s most well documented relationship, they regularly made appearances on red carpets and posted loved up images to their social media pages. Multiple reports claim it was Calvin who wanted to break up as it just wasn’t working anymore. They did manage to last a whole 15 months though.

Taylor’s songs ‘I Forgot That You Existed’, ‘Dancing With Our Hands Tied’ and ‘Getaway car’ are reported to be about Calvin. So, take your time to decipher the lyrics there.

Tom Hiddleston (2016)

These two were better known as Hiddleswift, and they were the love story that shocked the globe. The couple met in New York and then immediately took their romance international, crossing through places such as Rhode Island, Australia and England.

Unfortunately, just two months after Hiddleston was spotted in a ‘I Heart T.S.’ tee, Taylor reportedly called off the relationship. The two are still friends, but I think we can all agree we can feel the second-hand embarrassment for Hiddleston.

‘Getaway Car’ from the ‘Reputation’ album is supposedly about Tom, the lyrics allude not only to their travels and whirlwind romance but also to how she ended the relationship: ‘Shoulda known I’d be the first to leave’.

Joe Alwyn (2017-Now)

Aaaand finally, Joe Alwyn. Fast forward to 2022 and these two are still going extremely strong, longer than any of Taylor’s relationships have ever been in the past. That means it must be true live right?

The couple are incredible in shrouding their relationship in mystery, so the ins and outs of their relationship we will never know. The happy couple were first photographed in 2017, enjoying a coffee on a balcony in Nashville.

Many songs are supposed to be about Joe, including that of ‘Gorgeous’, ‘Lover’, ‘London Boy’ and ‘Cornelia Street’.

There have been many rumors that the couple are engaged, but unfortunately none of the claims have yet been confirmed by Taylor and Joe. But let’s just hope it really is a Love Story, after all Taylor’s been through with these men she deserves it.
