Decoding Black Tie Wedding Attire

Settling the black tie debate once and for all—here’s what to wear.

POSTED BY GRETCHEN DEUTSCH

Somewhere between tradition and TikTok, black tie has become the internet’s favorite thing to argue about. Apparently, no one agrees on what black tie means anymore, and even brides and grooms are adding to the confusion, assigning the label to weddings that don’t give the black tie experience.

Every wedding season, guests turn to social media for help deciding what to wear to a black-tie wedding. Then, of course, you go to the comment section, and viewers are screaming, “That’s not what black tie is!”

But if you are planning to attend one of these weddings, I’m here to settle this ongoing debate: what is actually considered black tie?

I’ve seen all sides of this debate. What’s the difference between black tie and white tie? What do people really mean by black tie optional? But in all, I think black tie is the perfect excuse to go all out and dress to the nines—because, realistically, when else are we doing that?

In order for a dress to be black tie, it needs to follow three main criteria: floor length, a structured, natural waist, and elegant fabric. But beyond that, black tie leaves room for interpretation–especially for the girls.

Yes, our outfits should always highlight the bride and groom, but our floor-length gowns don’t have to be completely minimalist. They can be fun and playful while still being formal. The happy couple just wants you to play up your sophistication to meet their “black-tie standards.”

Go for the floor-length gown in a classic fabric like satin, chiffon, or silk and something that fits your waist and flows to the floor—whether it’s a sleek column dress, a soft A-line, or a gown with a little movement. Small details like a subtle slit, gentle draping, or a touch of sparkle are fine too, as long as the overall look stays elegant.

So if you’re still second-guessing your outfit, think of this as your permission slip to go full glam—and then check out my FizzyPicks below for the easiest black tie looks that actually get it right.
