Pierpaolo Piccioli reflects on his role at Valentino in a stunning collection.

POSTED BY ALEXANDRA GRIECO

Pierpaolo Piccioli presented Valentino’s Fall 2022 couture show as the golden evening sun lit up Rome’s Spanish Steps. Models wore crafted designs descending the historic staircase, where the attached cobblestone street held the first Valentino atelier in 1959. A journey of time manifested from the first step to the last, with each colorful couture piece balancing Valentino’s origins with Piccioli’s identity.

Titled “The Beginning,” the collection’s opening played with colors, with untraditional pairings like neon yellow with purple or teal blue with red. A red rose motif grew from small embellishments to complete garment construction, a callback to the romanticism synonymous with Valentino Garavani’s early designs. Later pieces incorporated movement and light with full silver body paint, flowing fabrics and feathers, sequined pants, and aquatic-type headpieces.

Piccioli cultivated a diverse cast of models to maintain a theme of beauty, proving that fashion made for the thin and white is not reflective fashion. Piccioli also presented a rare choice for models, allowing them to decide between heeled or flat footwear to ensure safety down the slippery steps.

Celebrities showed out, with stars like Kate Hudson, Andrew Garfield, and Naomi Campbell sitting in the front row. Anne Hathaway, Florence Pugh, Ariana DeBose, Symone, and many more rocked head-to-toe looks in the famous Valentino pink. Piccioli invited 120 Roman fashion students to fill out the seating’s remainder.
