Universal Studios is opening a $7.7 billion resort in Beijing, China, on September 20. The theme park will feature a tribute to films including “Harry Potter,” “Despicable Me,” and “Tranformers” and will join Universal’s existing parks in Asia, besides Japan and Singapore.

The company confirmed the opening date of Universal Beijing via a statement and video posted on the Chinese social media platform WeChat.

Universal Studios Beijing Resort has been under construction since 2016 and has received strong support and backing from Chinese authorities, including the extension of one of Beijing’s main subway lines to the theme park.

The resort will feature 37 rides and host the world’s first “Kung Fu Panda” Land of Awesomeness. The park will debut facial cameras, which allow visitors to pay for meals, open storage lockers, and join express queues for rides without the need for a physical ticket.

Besides offering rides, shows, and restaurants, the theme park will offer two hotels, The Universal Studios Grand Hotel, the first-ever Universal-themed hotel, and the NUO Resort Hotel, featuring architecture inspired by the Qing Dynasty’s Old Summer Palace. The Grand Hotel is owned by Beijing International Resort Co., a joint venture between Universal Parks & Resorts and the state-owned Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Co.

Visitors with special corporate passes have been invited to test the park, and based upon the feedback given by the visitors; Universal Beijing Resort will “adjust operational practices and service details in preparation for the upcoming grand opening,” which is set to take place on September 20 according to the company.

Its opening has been postponed for several months due to the pandemic. However, as Covid cases in China remain low, there is a growing demand for travel and tourism, which feeds into the optimism of visitors. Nevertheless, visitors entering the theme park have to declare they were not experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms, and masks, as well as temperature checks, are mandatory.
