Diving Into The Style Of The UK & US
Let’s talk fashion.
True fashion has always been a universal language, with no borders or laws, no creative restrictions, or watermarks. The best part about fashion is that it belongs to everyone, and while many brands like to think they only cater to a small few, the truth about fashion is that you can transform anything into looking like luxury if you have the right tools and inspiration.
And when I say that fashion has no borders, I mean it; however, that doesn’t mean it’s virtually the same across the world. It’s the exact opposite. Hence, the reason why I wanted to do an article on the different types of fashion in other regions, specifically examining
the difference between the UK and the US. The US has made a name for itself in the fashion industry, known for its avant-garde and daring style choices that constantly take inspiration from different decades, whereas the UK has always been seen as more posh, focusing on clean lines and fun patterns. However, don’t for a second think that the UK is boring in the slightest. London is home to its iconic punk scene, showcasing dark makeup, spikey hair, red plaid, chains, and more. Artists like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen both took inspiration from the punk rockers who used to set foot in places like Blitz, The Roxy, and Vortex.
So how did both these countries get these labels that don't completely represent them?
Well, to answer that question, we have to go back in time. The roaring ’20s didn’t just have its moment in the US; it also made its way to the UK. However, it was done a little differently. Unlike in the US, the UK has a royal family from which many based their fashion inspirations. So the flapper dress was still somewhat modest and still had themes of the late 1800s, whereas, in the US, there was no royal family; ie, the dresses were shorter, more revealing, and flowy. It just goes to show that even our institutions have a say in how we dress.
