Tokyo Schools Abolish Controversial Dress Code Rules

Rules related to hairstyling and underwear color dropped.

Approximately 200 public highschools and educational institutions across Tokyo, will drop five controversial dress code regulations. Policy changes regarding regulating student’s underwear color, hair color, and hair style choices will all go into effect April 1, at the start of the new academic year.

School dress code across Japan went under significant scrutiny after a highschool student in Osaka sued her school in 2017. The female student argued that frequent coloring, to maintain the Black hair regulation, had damaged her hair and scalp, and caused her mental distress. She won the case and received money for her damages.

Students, parents, and schools across the Japanese capital continue to reevaluate previous, outdated dress code regulations in the name of self expression and more progressive gender beliefs.
