After months of speculation, teases, and behind-the-scenes glimpses, The Last of Us is officially returning to HBO. Season 2 kicks off this April, bringing Joel and Ellie back into our lives—and into even deeper chaos.

Set five years after the events of Season 1, the story picks up in Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are living relatively peaceful but emotionally fractured lives. The past still lingers, and yes, Joel’s lie about the Fireflies still hangs heavy in the air.

But peace never lasts long in the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us. According to the official synopsis, the pair will be pulled into a new kind of danger—one that’s even more unpredictable than before. And if you’ve played Part II of the game, you already know just how intense it’s about to get.

So When’s The First Episode Dropping?

Episode 1, titled “Future Days,” premieres on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 9PM ET/PT on HBO and will stream simultaneously on Max. That means you can either tune in live or stream it at your own pace—though you might want to avoid Twitter/X until you do, because spoilers will be unavoidable.

For viewers outside the US, the show will air slightly later depending on your time zone. Here’s the breakdown:

A Shorter, Sharper Season

Unlike Season 1’s nine-episode run, Season 2 is only dropping seven episodes. That might sound like a letdown, but according to co-creator Neil Druckmann, it’s entirely intentional. Speaking to Game Informer, he explained that the season’s pacing is rooted in the narrative’s natural structure, not any imposed episode count.

That seventh episode? It’s going to be a major turning point—one that sets the stage for what’s to come.
