Plaid Obsession: From Skirts to Blazers

There is honestly no plaid piece of clothing that I’m not instantly in love with, yet I never hear anyone talking about the pattern. It’s like the way people don’t constantly rave about the color black — no one needs to defend it. The chicness is just understood.

What used to be reserved for Burberry and completely dull otherwise is now less country club and more cool girl. Plaid has loosened up and become both more versatile and unpredictable. Whether the mood is corporate, countryside, collegiate, or Upper East Side, plaid effortlessly translates. 

Personally, I’m a modern-day Cher Horowitz — mentally living in her yellow plaid set from Clueless. But whatever your immediate vibe is, there’s always a version of the pattern that fits. 

The best part is that the print works on any piece. It belongs on asymmetrical maxi skirts, bomber jackets, capri pants, and the infamous quilted flaps from Chanel. Somehow, no matter the silhouette or setting, it never feels out of place.

I’m entirely on board for a print that embodies both comfort and edge. It drapes easily, whether it’s cut into a relaxed skirt or tailored into something sharper, and it layers without feeling bulky or overdone. Thrown over a tee, under a coat, tied at the waist, or structured into a blazer, plaid is one of the rare patterns that does the styling work for you. 

That kind of versatility is hard to come by. It’s what keeps the pattern feeling relevant. So even if the fall season is over, plaid will always have a place in my outfit rotation.
