Tanis Unveils "Kid": A Poignant Pop Anthem For Inner Child Freedom & Global Artistry
In an exclusive interview, the multilingual artist shares insights on her global upbringing.
Tanis is back with a poignant new single that invites us all to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with the freedom of our younger selves. Titled ‘Kid’, the track is a rich pop tapestry woven with nostalgic lyricism, cinematic visuals, and a message that feels deeply timely: maybe growing up doesn’t mean letting go of wonder.
Drawing from her global upbringing and multi-faceted artistry, Tanis delivers a moving reminder of how we evolve—and how, sometimes, the past still calls to us.
Priority speaks to the universal ache of feeling like an afterthought. Was there a moment — or relationship — that sparked this track?
There have probably been quite a few moments in my life, as well as in the lives of people close to me, that helped me create “Priority”. Personally, I went through a relationship where my voice was intentionally unheard, but then, from speaking to friends and hearing about their struggles brought together a sense for me that it may be a song worth writing about, as it’s not a feeling unique to me.
You’re known for writing in multiple languages. Did Priority or Kid begin in one language and evolve into another?
I do speak multiple languages, but when I write the lyrics in one language, I usually keep it that way. Each language has its own rhythms, and I find that when we translate, it is very hard to keep those rhythms while not losing the intention of the words. So long story short, “Priority” and “Kid” were both written in English and remained that way.
Your upbringing spans continents and cultures. How do those shifting landscapes influence the textures or themes in your music?
While I do not know if coming from a mixed culture and living a bit everywhere has formed what I write about or how I compose, it has definitely given me experiences, and without experiences, I would have nothing to say, write, or sing about.
What was the emotional anchor for Kid — was it memory, nostalgia, a message to your younger self?
The theme behind “Kid” is actually not really nostalgia or a message to my younger self, but a message to who I am today. It is a reminder not to let the pressures of growing up strip your childhood dreams away from you. It is a reminder that sometimes it is okay to be silly. It is a reminder to not let people tell you who and what you should be and just run around freely like you used to when you were a kid.
You've scored productions globally. How does the process of writing for film or broadcast compare to writing personal songs like Priority?
Film scoring and songwriting are both forms of composition, but they have an almost reverse process. When I score a film, I am given the story and the visuals by someone else and am tasked with helping them find the correct music to match the existing emotions of their story. With songwriting, I am composing in order to help me create the story I eventually hope to tell.
You’ve lived in six countries — do you find yourself borrowing from each musically (a rhythm here, a chord there), or does it all blend subconsciously?
I definitely like to sneak in certain elements in my arrangements, but many people might not hear them as they are tucked away in the mixes. Overall, though, I do not intentionally choose to represent instruments unless the music calls for it or it makes sense in context of the lyrics.
Your vocals are often understated, yet carry such weight. How do you approach vocal performance when the emotion of a song is so raw?
I truly think we need to find what the music calls for. Belting out words that have no place being sung that way doesn’t serve the purpose of storytelling, and for me, that’s what composing and songwriting is all about — telling stories in the best way you can.
As a multilingual songwriter, how do you choose which language feels right for a certain lyric or moment?
I honestly do not know! When I sit down and start composing at the piano, I will start mumbling lyrics and whatever language comes out is the one I stick to!
You recently won a Broadcast Production Award for Wildcard — congrats! Did that recognition shift your creative confidence in any way?
Thank you! It was an award given to me as part of an ensemble album, so I was not the only composer on that album. However, it was very nice to be recognized for my work, and it has helped me continue a strong working relationship with the team that curated that amazing instrumental album!
With Kid about to drop, what do you hope listeners walk away feeling — and what’s next in this genre-fluid, global soundscape you're building?
I hope “Kid” will be a reminder to everyone to be yourself and chase those ridiculous dreams, no matter what others say. And yes, there is a lot more to come. The next song is my mom’s favourite song, and she criticizes most of my tracks, so I hope everyone will love it as much as she does when it comes out!
‘Kid’ is a bold and beautiful entry in Tanis’ growing catalog, reaffirming her position as one of the most introspective and genre-blending artists of her generation. As she sings about longing, growing up, and letting go, one message remains clear: it’s never too late to keep dreaming.
