Slip Dresses Are The Epitome Of Chic

Slip dresses are something I've never been able to form a solid opinion on. On the one hand, I've seen so many celebrities pull them off — Gwyneth Paltrow's 1996 Calvin Klein look was ethereal, for instance. Everyone can appreciate how they bring a sense of refined minimalism to the red carpet.

With that being said, my style leans more maximalist. I'm mostly inspired by Y2K fashion, and in my head, slip dresses are so synonymous with 90s glam that, frankly, I always felt they represented a level of elegance I never thought I could attain.

However, I've recently been getting more into natural glam makeup, and I was surprised to find myself reaching for more understated clothing. My more quirky outfits fit perfectly when my eyeshadow is colorful and extravagant, but when I'm trying to channel hot girl makeup, they sometimes make my outfits seem... tackier?

When I saw a photo of Dakota Johnson's 2015 pink slip dress, something shifted. It was girly yet tasteful. Simple yet interesting. She managed to wear it with a classic red lip for just the right amount of wow factor.

That was the push I needed to buy my first slip dress. I chose a pale pink one and wore it to my friend's wedding. It was definitely a break from my usual vibe, and I doubt slip dresses will suddenly become my number one formal dress choice — but I felt pretty cool, and I can't deny how sophisticated they are.

Maybe I'll never become a minimalist fashion girl, but I love that experimenting with different styles can reveal a side of your wardrobe you never expected. Sometimes the pieces we avoid the most end up becoming the ones that surprise us.
