She bangs, She bangs: The New Hair Necessity

Soft curtain bangs will be springs newest hair obsession…

POSTED BY REBECCA AHERN

Bangs. Either your childhood nightmare reincarnated or a '70s boho babe’s best friend. We’re opting for the latter, as curtain bangs are set to become a 2021 spring favourite. If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram for the last few months, you would have seen everyone from Hailey Beiber to JLO sporting these face framers, but what to do when it comes to you…

We spoke to Jordana Cobella, Wella Uk Craft Expert and owner of Cobella Salon in London, who gave us her rundown of the essential do’s and don’t when it comes to your bangs.

“Curtain bangs are my go-to for all clients who are comfortable with face-framing but don’t want the full commitment of a fringe. We call it the brilliant Bardot fringe. Typically, it is cut shorter in the middle and longer towards the sides. The shape is so flattering and frames the face beautifully in an oval sweeping shape drawing attention to the cheekbones and eyes.”

Calling all our wavy babes…

“Definitely opt for (the curtain bang) if your hair is slightly wavy or kinks easily. It will be easy to style in the mornings and will only take minutes”.

Straight don’t hate…
“While it’s suitability is typically a great match for most hair types, I personally would avoid opting for curtain bangs if your hair is poker straight. This is because your hair will need a slight bend to replicate that sweeping motion so unless you are committed to blowdrying it with a round brush every morning, opt for something else”.

Do not try this at home…
Whatever you do, DO NOT and we repeat NOT attempt this by yourself. "Each fringe will require an intricate layering pattern tailored to your face shape," Jordana tells us, so as much as we love a DIY do, we’ll leave this one to the pros. Maintenance appointments are suggested every 4 weeks to keep your fringe fresh AF.

The Daily Grind…
This baby is going to need styling every day. "It will need styling on a daily basis with a round brush unless you are blessed with the most perfectly textured hair," Jordana adds. It's not exactly a low maintenance cut but we think the finished look is well worth an extra five-minute mirror primp. You got this!

Here are our favourite curtain bang styles that EVERYONE needs in their life…

Wavy Baby...

Do as Alexa Chung does and wear this effortless wave with pride. With a slight tousle and some product for texture…this really is all you need for that air of casual cool.

Curl Away...
We’ve died and gone to heaven with this one…full volume, full curl and its never been better! As the bang is cut to the frame of your face, curls are no exception to this look! Take a leaf from Yara Shahidi’s book and throw your curls into a bun on your head, or let them loose for full curl appeal.

Up and Out...

A ‘ain't nobody got time for that’ kinda gal? Chuck your hair up in a bun or pony like new momma Gigi and go for gold! Bangs add an interesting element to an otherwise staple up-do…let’s elevate!

Colour Colour Colour: Create a money-piece moment
...
We get it, bored of life and the first thing that springs to mind is a hair change. If cutting a curtain bang isn’t change enough then go full creative with a statement money piece shade at the front of the face. Green, blue, blonde…the world is your oyster.

I Woke Up Like This: Shaggy and effortless...

Well if Shane (a.ka. Katherine Moennig) from the iconic 2000’s  LGBTQ+ series, The L Word doesn’t spring to mind then we don’t know who does. Her effortless “I just rolled out bed” cut made her instant sex symbol status. What's hotter than an IDGAF attitude? I mean, let's be real she's had the same hairstyle for 15 years and she's still smashing styling goals. Easy to grow out and super low maintenance, a simple five min styling session in the morning and you’re good to go. The Queen herself JLO has been spotted sporting this 2000 shaggy favourite; need we say more…
