Selena Gomez Pushes Back Against Body-Shamers

Are we still doing this in 2023?

POSTED BY TAYLOR TOMLINSON

Selena's over her critics.

Selena Gomez took to TikTok Live to address body shamers, explaining how she’s prioritizing her health and encouraging self-love to her fans. Gomez, who’s been the target of nasty body-shaming in the past, explained how her lupus medication holds her water weight. The “Good for You” singer made sure to remind viewers to be confident in their own skin, outright telling the body-shamers to “go away”.

“We might have days where we feel like shit, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself, ” Gomez said,  “My medications are important and I believe they are what helps me.”

She took a moment to speak to viewers going through something similar, explaining how people may not always see the full story.

The Live was cut short when fans overused Tik Tok’s filter feature, involuntarily putting mustache face filters over Gomez (read the room, please). “This is getting a little too much,” the 30-year-old said, clearly fed-up dodging silly virtual cowboy hats while sincerely addressing a personal issue.

The “Only Murders in the Building” star was recently featured in Vanity Fair’s 2023 Hollywood Issue, discussing her bipolar diagnosis and recent documentary My Mind & Me. “I’m not ashamed of it. I don’t ever feel, even for five seconds, that I’m crazy,” said Gomez of the diagnosis.

Gomez, leaving her Disney days long behind her, is bolder and unapologetically her than ever before. The former child star proves to be a positive inspiration for her fans, choosing health over shame and self-doubt. While we're glad Gomez took the time to relay a good message, this isn't something she should have to do in 2023.
