Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a name synonymous with feminism. The late Supreme Court Justice’s tragic passing has brought many of her famous speeches and cases to light, highlighting her passion for equality. Many of the tribute posts and articles focus on her endeavors to liberate women, however it must not be forgotten that her feminism was not one-sided – she wanted rights for men too.
Discussions around feminism can be perceived as one-sided or pinning the genders against each other. RGB took these conversations and effectively showed men that they were also trapped in the gender caste system. In the 1975 Weinberger v. Wiesenfeld case, she helped male widower access his wife’s social security benefits. To do so she reversed a law that gave women access to their husband’s benefits, as the law didn’t work the other way. RGB removed men from the expectation of being the ‘provider’, whilst also removing the notion that women are more ‘dependent’.
She approached her work with a defense of true equality – a passion for us all to be equals. RBG believed that ‘gender-based discrimination hurts everyone,’ and also rallied for LGBTQ+ rights and people with disabilities too.
From standing up for the voting rights of the undocumented and our rights to breathe unpolluted air, RGB is an inspiration to all. Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for all of us with a passion and determination like no other.
