‘Rough Sex’ Defence Will No Longer Be Valid In UK

After a successful 18 month campaign the ‘rough sex’ defence has been abolished in the UK.

A newly published clause by the UK Government in its Domestic Abuse Bill has officially abolished the ‘rough sex’ defence, meaning that men will no longer be able to get away with claiming that they only killed on the basis of sex ‘going wrong.’

Shockingly the ‘rough sex’ defence over the past decade and up until June 30th 2020 (the date the defence was abolished), had seen a ninety percent increase and was disturbingly successful in over half the cases. [Source for this wecantconsenttothis.uk]

Most recently was the murder of back-packer Grace Millane; tragically strangled to death by a tinder date. Since her murder an 18 month campaign led by ‘We Can’t Consent To This’ has now successfully achieved an amendment to the law that will help to protect the safety of women, and help to uphold the importance of what it means to have consensual sex.

Whilst ‘We Can’t Consent To This’ has reiterated that ‘there is still so much to do’, this milestone moment in the UK Domestic Abuse Bill is certainly a powerful step in the right direction.
