Winter Fashion 2025: The Romcom Aesthetic is Back
The art of looking perfectly unprepared for love.
I’m a big believer in dressing for the job you want, and as we’re approaching ‘cuffing season’, that job is 100% Romcom main character.
Now I know, it’s been established that having a boyfriend is kind of embarrassing, but having lots of dates? Forever chic. So, how do we get booked and busy this wintertime? Easy, put away Hinge and pick up a bag of aesthetically spillable groceries; it’s time to manifest your meet-cute.
To get a meet-cute, you must dress for a meet-cute. The only question is, how do rom-com stars dress? Luckily, I’ve done my research (watched Bridget Jones Diary, When Harry Met Sally, The Holiday, and Love Actually) and compiled a little guide for achieving what I can only describe as ‘scruffy chic’.
One thing I adore about romcom style is how it frequently reflects the heroine herself. Cameron Diaz in the holiday is always dressed sleek and structured, while Kate Winslet's wardrobe leans cozy and chaotic. Each outfit tells you exactly where they are emotionally. So, maybe dressing for love starts with dressing for yourself: if you're craving ease, reach for soft layers; if you're seeking excitement, consider a bold heel.
The Romcom Girlie guidelines:
Color scheme:
Bright pastels are practically mandatory, but neutrals are just as charming if that's more your palette.
Short skirts or comfy pants:
A cheeky mini skirt is sure to leave an impression, while a good pair of jeans or tracksuit bottoms says cute, comfy and confident.
Cardigans:
Soft, layered, a little oversized, cardis are perfect for sending out huggable and stylish vibes.
Layers:
Winter's greatest gift. Think Tights + Skirt + Shirt + Cardigan + Coat + Scarf. Keep it coordinated, keep it cute.
Boots or Heels:
Nothing says 'ready to fall in love' like a pair of easily trippable shoes.
Hair:
Fitting for an often-slept-on accessory, you want your hair to look like you just woke up and ran a comb through it. Think authentically messy bun, scrunchies, the classically romantic half-up-half-down look, a quickly pulled together plait and remember, curlier the better.
Even if love doesn't find you this winter, make sure you find yourself, and, if you fancy a romcom-worthy wardrobe, try shopping some of our romantic Fizzypicks:
