Rise Of The Midi: Why My Skirts Are Getting Longer

As midi skirts take on new, interesting forms this summer, here are my top styles.

I know midi skirts have been having a moment this summer. I too have been growing my collection of not-too-short, not-too-long skirts. But what I want to highlight are the many exciting styles that have been popping up on my feed, bringing the midi skirt from serious, conservative, and stale to fresh, young, and chic.

My wardrobe mostly consists of light cotton A-line midis, usually with large button appliques down the front. I am a huge 50s fan, so I adore the silhouette when worn with Mary Janes and a dainty short-sleeved blouse. This year, however, I find myself itching to branch out into a more dynamic cut.

The high-low midi has had a huge presence across the high street this year, giving a looser, more romantic look that I find adorable. I will admit that the asymmetrical midi skirt is also a top contender, with a usually flowing hem that creates drama and movement as you strut. And who doesn’t want to make an entrance? I’d style both with a kitten heel or sandal to lean into the feminine silhouette and channel a cosmopolitan, 90s vibe, which I know we’ve all been loving lately.

Another more feminine style I’ve had my eye on is the lace-trimmed trend, where silk or satin skirts are hemmed with gorgeous, elaborate lace pieces. I’ve even seen some that are completely sheer, with velvet flowers woven into the fabric. While a little daring, it’s definitely something I’d like to see more of. To tone it down, I would recommend a skinny shoe, think an Adidas Tokyo or an Onitsuka Tiger.

Following on from my love of dynamism and interest is the bubble-hem midi. It may be controversial to some, and I agree it could be hard to style, yet I find the impact such an attractive feature. I’d add a simple fitted cami or T-shirt to this fit so as not to overpower the effect of the skirt, and I’d stick with a flat shoe, either ballet flats or Mary Janes. Really, the skirt speaks for itself.

There are so many directions to take with a midi skirt. I love the jean styles with retro-style rounded pockets, as well as the cool, more edgy cargo styles too. I find the midi such a comfortable length for city trips, outdoor days, and college activities like lectures and studying. It’s super versatile and a worthwhile investment in my opinion.
