Revenge Porn Is Ruining Lives

Women in Ireland are suffering and it's totally legal.

Nudes, nudes, nudes. We all love nudes. But we don’t love nudes when they’re not consensual. With the year we’ve had, people of all ages are taking nudes. With the rise of websites such as Admire Me and Only Fans, nudes are precious, arty, and great for boosting self-esteem. However, some people seem to think it is okay to share a private message. A message that was sent in confidence. A message that included an intimate image or video. A message that could be shared thousands of times within minutes. Trust and lives have been broken with one click of a button.

Did you know, revenge porn is not illegal in Ireland? The non-consensual disruption of explicit images is not illegal. 500 Discord users are responsible for sharing over 1,000 explicit images of teenagers and young women in Ireland but are getting away with it.

This is the horrible reality of revenge porn. You may think that only after a messy break-up can an ex share your nudes. But that isn’t always the case. Anyone can share anything regardless of relationship status. Although, this isn’t to make people feel worried about sending explicit images as revenge porn isn’t their fault.

With the rise of technology taking inmate photos and videos is very common. People are often told not to send nudes to stay safe online. Whilst it is important to promote safety whilst online, this message could be more damaging than you think. It could be interpreted that if someone sends you a nude, they don’t mind it being made public because if they did, they wouldn’t have sent it.

THIS ISN’T THE CASE.

It is not the victim’s fault that other people took advantage of the situation.

After an explicit image is shared, the only person affected is the victim. Jobs, friendships, family, and lives, can all be lost at the victim’s expense. Sexual abuse can have a long-term effect on victims causing anxiety, PTSD, and depression. And these life-changing, life-damaging situations are totally legal in Ireland.

Sign the petition. Help women in Ireland prosecute those who took advantage of them.
