Pantone's 2022 Color Of The Year Is Here And It's Very Peri(winkle)
The new periwinkle shade, "Very Peri," reflects on these past few years and looks towards the possibilities of tomorrow.
For the 2022 Color of the Year, the Pantone Color Institute wanted to create a color that answers everyone’s questions.
“This is a really different time,” executive director Leatrice Eiseman and vice president Laurie Pressman said in a joint interview. “How do we capture this moment with the world in transformation as it is? How can we come up with something that symbolizes the global zeitgeist and the transition the world is going through?”
With the very big task of creating a conversation around color on their hands, the Pantone Color Institute settled on “Very Peri,” a “dynamic periwinkle.”
The “blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone” is meant to invoke the feelings of “faithfulness and constancy” as well as “energy and excitement.” To capture the “promise of eye-opening perspectives and possibilities” and “our increased reliance on digital technology,” the Pantone Color Institute created a brand new shade for the 2022 Color of the Year — something that has never been done before.
"Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place," Pressman said. “The futuristic aspect to it plays not only to technology but also to where our minds can go. There will be a better space out there. That’s something to strive for.”
