Old Hollywood: The Inspo That Just Keeps Inspo’ing

We’ll never be tired of taking inspo from it!

POSTED BY ELSIE FAULKNER

From the Kardashian-Jenner's repeated attempts at breathing new life into this old aesthetic to events such as the just-gone Academy Museum Gala calling celebs to pull out vintage finds exuding glamour and elegance, the classic style of Old Hollywood continues to be re-born in a manner that seems simply timeless.

Icons of the Golden Era

The trend started long ago and never seems to stop. The Old Hollywood aesthetic has been rising for decades, and only in the last few years has it truly taken flight. It seems to us that the art of taking inspiration from classic Hollywood movies and stars will never end. Why? Because the stars of the day really did know how to dress.

There were, of course, the – quite literally – biggest and shiniest stars of the Old Hollywood world: Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn and their biggest films: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. These ladies and these films inspired not just the generations of women from their times, but women long after them.

Modern Celebrities Channeling Old Hollywood

Again, I bring up the infamous Kardashian-Jenner women who have never been shy to recreate or be inspired by the looks of these iconic stars and their films.

Taking inspo from Marilyn Monroe specifically, Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn’s famous ‘Happy Birthday Dress’ the old star wore when singing to President JFK in 1962. Meanwhile, Kendall and Kylie each took turns at dressing as Marilyn. Kylie rocked Monroe’s iconic pink dress and gloves from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Kendall sported a simpler look from her 1953 Life magazine photoshoot. If this wasn’t enough, Kendall was also said to channel a My Fair Lady-Audrey at the 2021 Met Gala in her sheer, sparkling, Givenchy gown that allegedly reflected this film.

Signature Styles That Define the Aesthetic

It isn’t just the Kar-Jenners who have been forever taking shots at looking like these old stars, and it hasn’t just been these specific stars and their films that people have been taking inspo from.  Natalie Portman, Penelope Cruz, Winona Ryder, Rita Moreno, and many more celebs, have – at one point or another – taken huge inspiration from the time of old Hollywood films and stars. From sporting styles and prints/patterns of the time like polka dots, looped scarves, and long, satin gloves, to adorning their looks with layers of sparkling jewelry and brooches, to wearing elegant or bold colors like reds, oranges, creams, and blacks, so many people have taken inspiration from the old stars and styles that have been and gone.

How to Embrace Old Hollywood Style

From a Jackie Kennedy Onassis-inspired look by Gigi Hadid to a homage to Josephine Baker by Yara Shahidi that were both at the 2021 Met Gala, celebs are always channeling and embodying the grace and simplicity of the looks worn by stars from long ago.

So, if you want to continue creating and wearing innovative, elegant, simple yet still sophisticated looks to die for, all you must do is follow in the footsteps of old Hollywood stars. Rock cigarette trousers, satin gloves, little black dresses, and glittering jewels, and watch yourself shimmer and shine like the best of them.
