Not All Aesthetics Need a Wardrobe Overhaul
Why I’m suddenly rethinking the way I dress.
Fashion has never felt more fragmented. Everywhere I look, there’s a new “aesthetic” with its own set of rules, colors, and reference points. And while I love how expressive that is, I’ve started to realise something: not every style is actually realistic to live in.
Some aesthetics ask you to constantly keep up — buying, updating, refining. Others quietly sit in the background and rely on pieces you probably already own. And lately, those are the ones I keep coming back to.
I didn’t really think about this shift until I noticed how often I was reaching for the same kinds of outfits without meaning to. Nothing particularly trend-led, nothing overly styled — just easy combinations that somehow always work.

There’s a version of dressing that leans into this idea completely. People call it normcore, but I’ve always thought of it more as “not overthinking it.” It’s the kind of wardrobe built on basics: straight jeans, simple tees, sweatshirts, sneakers, baseball caps. Things that don’t try too hard to stand out, which is exactly why they do.
I used to think this kind of dressing was boring. But I’ve changed my mind. There’s something appealing about an outfit that doesn’t need explaining. You just put it on and move on with your day — no second guessing, no styling formulas.

Then there’s the other end of the spectrum — the version of minimal dressing that does feel intentional. Clean, polished, slightly put together in a way that still feels effortless. I notice this most in outfits built around neutrals: tailored trousers, crisp shirts, simple gold jewellery. Nothing loud, but everything considered.
It’s funny how small details shift the entire mood of an outfit. The same jeans that feel relaxed one day can feel completely different with a blazer or a structured coat thrown over them. That’s something I’ve been paying more attention to lately — how styling, not shopping, does most of the work.

And then there’s street style, which I’ve started to appreciate more for its lack of rules than anything else. It’s not really about owning specific pieces — it’s about mixing things that technically shouldn’t work together. A hoodie with tailored trousers, sneakers with a more polished coat, something casual paired with something slightly unexpected. It’s less about defining an aesthetic and more about experimenting with what you already have.

Maybe that’s what all of this comes down to. Not choosing an aesthetic and building a wardrobe around it, but realising how flexible clothes actually are when you stop trying to categorise them too strictly.
And suddenly, dressing feels a lot less like keeping up — and a lot more like just getting dressed.
