Nintendo Confirms Switch Successor Will Support Original Switch Games
Backward compatibility confirmed.
Nintendo has officially confirmed that its much-anticipated Switch successor, tentatively called the "Switch 2," will support games made for the original console. Although the new device hasn't been fully revealed, Nintendo has dropped several key hints over the past year, including backward compatibility with existing Switch titles and the continuation of Nintendo Switch Online.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared details during the company’s recent Corporate Management Policy Briefing, saying, “Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well.” The confirmation ensures that existing Switch games and online services will seamlessly transition to the new device.
While it’s clear that the Switch 2 will support original Switch games, it’s still unknown whether this will require a physical cartridge slot or if games will be available through digital download. Nintendo promises further details on compatibility and other features closer to the official launch announcement.
