Nike Signs First Refugee Athlete Cindy Ngamba in Historic Move

Empowering displaced athletes through sport.

POSTED BY ZOE TYLER

Nike has taken a significant step forward in its mission to support displaced athletes by signing boxer Cindy Ngamba as its first refugee athlete. This partnership, part of Nike's ongoing collaboration with the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF), is more than just a business deal—it's a powerful statement about the transformative power of sport.

Cindy Ngamba's journey is both inspiring and emblematic of the challenges faced by many refugees. Born in Cameroon, Cindy left her home country at the age of 11 and found a new path in the United Kingdom. Despite the odds, she has become a three-time national boxing champion and a dedicated coach for young athletes. Her story underscores the message that refugee athletes, like all athletes, possess incredible potential and resilience.

Nike's collaboration with the ORF aims to provide displaced individuals with opportunities to engage in sports, fostering a sense of community and belonging. This initiative is particularly focused on empowering women and girls through the ORF's Terrains d’Avenir program in Paris. By creating more inclusive play and sport environments, Nike and the ORF are working to boost confidence and improve mental health among displaced youth.

The support doesn't stop at community programs. Nike is also providing uniforms for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team and backing the Refugee Athlete Scholarship Program, which supports 63 refugee athletes worldwide. This comprehensive approach ensures that athletes like Cindy Ngamba receive the resources they need to succeed both on and off the field.

Vanessa Garcia-Brito, Nike's Chief Social & Community Impact Officer, highlighted the importance of this initiative, especially for girls who face significant barriers to participation in sports. "Globally, girls face complex cultural and social barriers and, as a result, are moving the least," she explained. Nike's support aims to change this by providing displaced girls with strong, caring mentors and coaches who can empower them with a lifetime of confidence.

Nike’s partnership with Cindy Ngamba and the ORF reflects a broader commitment to social impact and equity. It’s about more than just sports; it’s about creating a better future for everyone. By leveling the playing field for displaced athletes, Nike is not only promoting athletic excellence but also fostering hope, resilience, and a sense of belonging for those who need it most.

In essence, Nike’s collaboration with the ORF and the sponsorship of Cindy Ngamba is a shining example of how the power of sport can bring about positive change, breaking down barriers and building stronger, more inclusive communities.
